Alternative Education Programs are available in every state in the country. In California, and specifically in Inyo County, the program options include Independent Study, Opportunity Programs, a Community Day School and a Community School. Students who attend an alternative education program may be at-risk, in danger of failing or just not fit in socially or emotionally in the public school system. There is no all-encompassing definition that fits every student who attends an Alternative Education Program. The one constant is that they all need something different than that which is being offered in the traditional schools. Alternative Education Programs are designed to be comprehensive in nature, in that most either augment or supplement the traditional program in some way.

Jill Kinmont Boothe School
Jill Kinmont Boothe School, a county community school, provides a specialized education program to students who are referred to an alternative educational setting. Our mission is to guide each student’s academic, social, and emotional growth, and to teach the recognition of choices and acceptance of personal responsibility for choices made. We believe each student is valuable, unique, and capable of success in both school and life.
Our goals include advancing each student’s ability to learn individually as well as cooperatively. The alternative curriculum offered is specifically designed to address the learning styles and the reading and mathematics levels of the students via hands-on, high interest lessons. Through modeling and teaching personal responsibility, we strive to instill tolerance of and empathy toward others. We continually strive to provide a student-centered educational program that promotes the intellectual, physical and emotional growth of our students. We provide students with guidance toward a positive, productive future.
